Citybreaks in Switzerland - a great option at any time of year

If you are looking for a country that offers you a choice of perfect short-break or city-break destinations, then there are not many places that can compete with the Swiss jewels of Zurich, Geneva, Bern and Basel. These are beautiful cities surrounded by mountains, hills and delightful scenery with beautiful buildings and unforgettable style.

However, you should not miss out on becoming friends with Switzerland’s less well-known cities, such as Luzern, Neuchatel, Biel or historic Sion. For a veritable contrast, consider visiting Lugano in the heart of the Italian-speaking region of the Ticino - an area that is not particularly familiar to British visitors, but is just crying out to be discovered.
You can fly into a selection of airports. In the case of Zurich, Geneva and Basel, there are an extensive selection of flight services from all the main UK airports. If you can get easily to London City, then you can fly into Bern-Belp Airport. For Lugano, the biggest range of flights would be into Milan. However, it isn’t unheard of for people to use flights into Friedrichshafen or Munich in Germany, or Innsbruck in Austria to access eastern Switzerland, or Lyon or Chambery, if travelling into the French-speaking Cantons in the west. In the case of Zurich and Geneva, particularly, it could not be easier to get from the airport into the centre of their cities, using the excellent rail-links from the stations beneath the airports. In the case of Bern-Belp and Basel, there are excellent public transport links available, and if you are landing into Milan, you can take an airport bus to the centre, and catch a train from the Main Station.
If you fly into Zurich or Geneva, getting to other cities such as Bern, Luzern, Lausanne, Montreux, Neuchatel, Biel or Sion couldn’t be easier. Go down the escalators to the Airport Stations, and you’ll have immediate access into the legendary Swiss rail network, connecting all over the country, and fully integrated into the Postbus and tram networks. We can book all your rail journeys for you, either on an individual basis, or using one of the many 'Swiss Rail Pass' options, which are ideal if you do not want to be bound to particular days or times of travel.
Once in the cities themselves, you can rely completely on their excellent public transport services, combining rail, buses and trams. All the cities have large pedestrian-free areas in their centres, and could never be accused of being short of wonderful places to eat and drink, with museums and art galleries a-plenty to explore.
Obviously, one of the most popular times to visit the cities of Switzerland is in the run up to Christmas, when they switch into festive season mood and start with their Christmas Markets. You will find more about these in the Winter section of this website, so take a look at the information there and you can start to make your plans as to which city or cities you would like to visit.
The cities of Switzerland offer you everything that a city-break destination should – whether you are looking for a Christmas market, romantic spring break, summer warmth, or the colours of Autumn – perfect, whatever the time of year.
